Hotel categories in Turkiye are assigned and monitored by the government. The following will help you visualize what to expect in each category:

3 Star/***: Perfect for the traveler who views hotels as just a place to sleep in a convenient location, Turkey's three star hotels provide a simple clean room with private bathroom, although often with a shower (not bathtub). Most do have air conditioning, however it is rare to find a swimming pool. They are in general similar to three star hotels in Europe.

4 Star/****: For the traveler who wants a little more in the way of amenities, Turkiye's four star hotels are perfect. Most have air conditioning (although not all) and many have swimming pools. You are also likely to find clubs, shops and salons.

5 Star/*****: When nothing but the best available accommodations in Turkiye will do, you simply must reserve a five star hotel . Luxurious, spacious bedrooms with full bathroom, grand lobbies, room service, chic shops, fine restaurants and the latest in health club facilities, they almost always have swimming pools, as well. Some are sumptuous enough to be palaces and in the case of Istanbul, some actually ARE renovated palaces such as the Ciragan Palace.

Special Class/SC: If you prefer charm and location over modern convenience, you are in for a true delight in Turkey's Special hotels. Often they are set in renovated wooden Ottoman homes or old inns over 100 years old. Some rooms may have a different character, shape and size, but all have private bathrooms. These hotels usually do not have swimming pools or air conditioning. However you can throw open the windows and have the muezzins call carried in on the breeze.
