The ancient site of Pergamon is located in the Bakircay (Kaikos) river basin, 100 kilometers / 62 miles north of Izmir. 
The Zeus Altar was constructed by Eumenes II (197-159 BC) as a memorial of his victory against the Galatians. The Zeus Altar was taken from Pergamon in 1871 and carried to Germany  John.
In early Christianity, Pergamon became one of the Seven Churches of Asia mentioned in the Book of Revelation by St. John.
Among the physicians of the Asclepion was Galen who was born in Pergamon (129-199 AD) and made anatomical studies over the human body functions.

Pergamon Tour
